Las Vegas – Last week I had the pleasure of being the Director of Photography on a terrific little short film called “Old Hollywood”. It takes place in, you guessed it, old Hollywood, specifically, in a nightclub in 1939. I think this may have been the first period film I’ve worked on which was fun. The location we filmed in was nearly perfect for the setting even though it was shot in Las Vegas. We filmed at the legendary Golden Steer Steakhouse on Sahara, just off the Strip which looks just as it did in the 1950′s when folks like Sinatra, Dean Martin and Elvis used to be regulars.
We had first class actors, Tom Fisco and Dani Meyer in the lead roles of the detective and the nightclub singer/mob maul (spelling?). We had a great, hard working, enthusiastic crew, most of whom worked together for the first time on this film. The film was directed by first time director, and perhaps one of the youngest directors, Rachel Verret. I have to say that I was quite impressed with her. She was very professional, had a vision and knew how to communicate her vision to the rest of us. I would not be at all surprised if she continues on this path and becomes a very successful Hollywood director.
It was a great atmosphere to work in, with little stress … despite a little mishap with a piano leg. I’d work with this crew again any day… and hope to.
